Virtual Patient Gallery Collection

The virtual patients/e-cases in this collection were contributed by the member of the CHEC-CESC Steering Committee.

 What is a virtual patient?

“An interactive computer simulation of real-life clinical scenarios for the purpose of medical training, education or assessment” (Ellaway, Candler, Greene & Smothers)  

“A specific type of computer-based program that simulates real-life clinical scenarios; learners emulate the roles of health care providers to obtain a history, conduct a physical exam, and make diagnostic and therapeutic decisions” (Candler)

Process: 
The CHEC-CESC Steering committee is made up of clinician educators and medical informatics experts.

A Fatigued Figure

Description: 

By the end of the virtual patient simulation, the learner should be able to:

  • Identify the pertinent questions, physical examinations, and investigations needed to diagnose a patient who presents with fatigue.
  • Demonstrate the skills needed to manage medical conditions such as anemia, menorrhagia and neoplasm.
  • Demonstrate the incorporation of electronic medical records (EMR) in patient care.
  • Demonstrate effective management skills through the judicious and cost-effective use of tests and resources.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of inter- and intra-office collaboration in patient care between professionals including, but not limited to, nurses, family physicians, specialists, nutritionists, and therapists.

3rd place winner in the CHEC-CESC Virtual Patient Challenge 2012-2013. 

The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) and Canada Health Infoway, are proud to announce the 3rd place winner of the CHEC-CESC Virtual Patient Challenge 2012 as part of the AFMC-Infoway Physician in Training e-Health Curriculum and e-Learning initiative.

The focus of the challenge is on virtual patients that incorporate the use of electronic health records (EHRs) and other aspects of e-health to improve patient care. Below you will find the submission requirements including e-Health topics that must be incorporated in the case design, and the pedagogical and instructional case design criteria.

An Abdominal Brief

Description: 

At the end of this case, the student should:

  • Know all the components of a complete history and how to elicit them.
  • Be comprehensively knowledgeable about biliary colic, acute cholecystitis, acute cholangitis, and acute pancreatitis;
    • Risk factors and pathophysiology
    • Signs and symptoms
    • Laboratory and imaging studies
    • Management and treatment plans
  • Know how to maximize effective communication and teamwork to enhance patient care; e.g. the use of consults, communication tools such as SBAR and SIGNOUT?, and patient-centered inter-professional pre-operative assessments.
  • Be comfortable with electronic health records, while being aware of patient safety, privacy and confidentiality issues.
