To help better prepare medical students to practice in modern, technology-enabled, clinical environments, the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) in partnership with Canada Health Infoway (Infoway) has initiated a project on eHealth curriculum and eLearning.

 Project Goals

1)     Facilitate and support national engagement of the faculty of medicine decanal teams, clinician educators and learners on medical informatics curriculum related to electronic health records including the development of an online community and national symposium at the Canadian Conference of Medical Education (CCME).

2)     Identify the medical informatics curriculum, related pedagogical resources, and core competencies addressing electronic health records.

3)     Support a student initiative on e-health through the launch of a virtual patient challenge.

4)     Establish a yearly, AFMC/Canada Health Infoway award for Canada ingenuity in the advancement of medical informatics curriculum and learning opportunities related to electronic health record systems.

To receive project updates, learn more about eHealth initiative at Canadian faculties of medicine, and collaborate with students and faculty from across Canada, please join this online community. What is Health Informatics? - Video

Description:

Short video explaining health informatics. Interviews conducted by Dr. Katrina Hurley.

Description from Youtube, by Dr. Katrina Hurley:

What is health informatics? In the words of Dr. Noni MacDonald...:
"Most of the way I've seen it defined is the intersection with health information, computer science and health care and health systems but I think that's very linear and very narrow in what it is. For me what Health Informatics is really is about is how do we take all of these tools and have everybody able to manage health, health care systems and their own personal health in a better way. That's whether you're the mayor of the city, whether you're the Dean of Medicine, whether you're the CEO of one of the biggest health organization or you're John Q Public who's just cut their finger. That's what it's all about."
Filmed at Dalhousie University during summer 2010.
Edited by Mohammed Al-Bakri during summer 2011.

Participants:
Dr. Grace Paterson
Dr. Noni MacDonald

A Night in the CCU

Description:

Virtual patient case highlighting the use of electronic medical records.

Patient presents with myocardial infarction and goes on to develop TTP as a treatment-related complication.

3rd place winner in the CHEC-CESC Virtual Patient Challenge 2011-12.
The CHEC-CHEC Virtual Patient Challenge is designed to recognize excellence in e-learning among Canadian healthcare educators and learners and highlight the utility of virtual patients for learning, teaching, and assessment. The Challenge is an initiative of the AFMC-Infoway Physician in Training e-Health Curriculum and eLearning project. The focus of the challenge is on virtual patients that incorporate the use of electronic health records (EHRs) and other e-health components that can be used to improve patient care.

Poppy Gone: Prenatal Care

Description:

This case is part of a series being generated for the CFPC SharcFM series.

This particular case deals only with the very early issues in a pregnancy. Follow along with Poppy's pregnancy as she goes through a series of prenatal adventures. While each case will be standalone, there is also benefit to exploring the case series longitudinally to see how her pregnancy unfolds.

Learning Objectives:

-- Explore some common issues in early prenatal care
-- Develop awareness of costs of common investigations
-- Demonstrate critical thinking around common screening measures
-- Develop awareness of how use of an EMR can improve practice

Target learner groups: primarily late stage medical students, Clerks and early Residents. Clinical faculty may want to use the issues raised in this case to explore some other teaching issues, such as around ethics.
