At its fall 2008 meeting, the Board of Directors of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) formally endorsed the principles set out in the Association of American Medical Colleges’ (AAMC) report titled Industry Funding of Medical Education. Since this time, the AFMC hosted a national 2-day meeting on the topic of conflict of interest which brought together representatives from faculties across the country. The AFMC Board of Directors have also endorsed a policy paper authored by the AFMC Standing Committee on Continuing Professional Development (CPD) regarding the role of industry in continuing professional development in Canadian faculties of medicine. The paper, which was the product of a comprehensive process to find consensus between all university CME/CPD offices outlines the ethical standards and principles they will be guided by in all their relationships with industry.
In order to stimulate discussion and collaboration in the area of Conflict of Interest, AFMC will hold further meetings on the topic.
AFMC has also created this space on the Canadian Healthcare Education Commons (CHEC) for our faculties which will serve as a repository of documents and resources for our faculties including relevant reports published in and outside of Canada, teaching resources pertaining to COI, as well as codes and policies from across the country. We hope you find this forum of interest and encourage you to share your thoughts and resources.
