Influencing Change: Preparing the Next Generation of Clinicians to Practice in the Digital Age

Building on a foundation established in 2011 by Canada Health Infoway and Canada’s faculties of medicine, nursing, and pharmacy this article outlines efforts and initiatives to support faculty in preparing future clinicians to understand and practice in a digital environment. Key Points:

  • The AFMC and Infoway launched an environmental scan to assess undergraduate e-Health curricula at Canadian medical schools, culminating in the publication of the first ever national e-Health Competencies for Undergraduate Medical Education (2014) aligned with the CanMEDS 2015 Physician Competency Framework.
  • In nursing, the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN 2015) and Infoway have been working together to help new nursing graduates enter the workforce able to practice effectively in the increasingly electronic world of healthcare delivery. Educational resources have been created to support the nursing faculty in adopting and integrating the Nursing Informatics Entry-to-Practice Competencies for Registered Nurses.
  • The joint Association of Faculties of Pharmacy (AFPC 2015) and Infoway project developed and validated an informatics competency framework based on extensive literature review and review of existing competency frameworks. The complementary Informatics for Pharmacy Students e-Resource is a national online education programme, primarily directed at pharmacy students but also of value to practicing pharmacists.

Individually and collectively, the goal of these efforts is to “figure out what and how to change to meet the challenges of the digital revolution that is the hallmark of the 21st century” (Sinclair, 2014).
